Macron urges tough response in light of latest Russian strikes

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for “strong measures” in case Russia continues to block efforts to negotiate a peace deal on the war in Ukraine, as deadly Russian attacks on the smaller neighbour continue unabated.

Writing on X on Sunday, Macron said Russia’s attacks “must come to an end.”

“A ceasefire is needed as soon as possible. And strong measures if Russia continues to try to buy time and refuse peace,” the French president said.

It comes after one person was killed and three injured by a Russian strike on Kiev on Sunday.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia launched more than 1,460 glide bombs, some 670 drones and more than 30 missiles at the neighbouring country last week alone.

A total of 18 people, including nine children, were killed in a Russian missile attack on Kryvyi Rih on Friday.

Unlike Ukraine, Russia continues to refuse a US proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, insisting that military aid to Kiev to be halted, among other demands.
