Adidas Has Another Sneaker Coming That Looks a Lot Like Pharrell’s Jellyfish for Half the Price
The Jellyfish has been a major hit for Adidas and Pharrell, their most buzzy model since the NMD Hu’s run in the late 2010s. Each of the three colorways released thus far promptly sold out, with the first commanding prices all the way up to $1,700 on the resale market.
An easier purchase may be on the way, however, as Adidas is set to introduce another sneaker based on the same source material. The Adidas Adistar XLG 2.0 is a close lookalike for Pharrell‘s Jellyfish, taking a similar oversized approach in its reinterpretation of the Adistar Cushion 3. Both even share the same chunky sole unit, and the lines on the two uppers are near mirror images of each other. The key difference lies in the proportions of the TPU overlays, as they protrude much further on Pharrell’s sneaker.
Inspiring both shoes is the Adistar Cushion 3, a running shoe that originally released in 2000. Adidas has also reissued the retro runner true to its original form, but it hasn’t reached the same level of hype as the Pharrell collaboration.
“We did a lot of experimenting, pushing materials and methods that hadn’t been used this way before,” Pharrell told Footwear News. “The sculptural upper uses a Flow Mold process, but we went beyond the normal limits on height and shape. We wanted it to move and breathe, to feel alive. Then we added our touch: glow-in-the-dark details and bold colorways.”
Those familiar with Adidas’ wider lineup will recognize the “XLG” suffix, as it’s been used for other oversized recreations of some of its core models, including the Samba and Superstar.
The Adidas Superstar XLG 2.0 will release on Feb. 26. Pricing is set at $150, which is half that of the Jellyfish.
