Mets, Red Sox Could Swap Infielders If Pete Alonso Leaves in Free Agency
The New York Mets are slowly but surely losing hope of re-signing Pete Alonso.
In addition to talking to the Mets, Alonso is reportedly negotiating with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Angels. As a result, the Mets are starting to look externally for their new first baseman.
They may not have to look far as there’s an option just a little bit north in the American League East.

Triston Casas hit .241 this past season with 13 home runs and 32 RBI. In terms of power and run production, it wasn’t his best season as his totals were essentially cut in half from 2023. However, there is optimism he can return to those numbers or produce more with only being 25 years old.
Here is what a potential trade could look like:
- New York Mets acquire: 1B Triston Casas
- Boston Red Sox acquire: INF Mark Vientos
The Mets would receive Casas who has a lot of untapped potential both at the plate and in the field. He would help provide a youthful spark to a team with a lot of experienced veterans.
Perhaps the most appealing aspect for the Mets is they would have Casas under team control for four more years. He is entering his final year of pre-arbitration in 2025, so the Mets would get plenty of time with his prime years.
As for the Red Sox, they would also get the best years with Vientos as he is going into just his second season of pre-arbitration. The Red Sox would have him under team control for five more seasons.
Vientos had a career season in 2024 in which he hit .266 with 27 home runs and 71 RBI. He was a strong addition to the Mets lineup and helped them make the run to the NLCS.
The Red Sox need right-handed bats, and Vientos would provide just that for them. Alex Cora could then move Rafael Devers over to first base and play Vientos at third.
