Watch how 16-year-old golden retriever reacts to “big chunk of steak”

A recent TikTok video of a senior dog’s reaction to being offered a special treat and how he retrieved it quickly melted people’s hearts.

The 16-year-old golden retriever named Happy has arthritis, the owner told Newsweek via TikTok. Canine arthritis can affect a dog’s legs, hips and back. It makes everyday movement painful. The American Kennel Club (AKC) reported that about one in five dogs experience canine arthritis. It is more prevalent in senior dogs.

But Happy’s arthritis hasn’t slowed him down. His owner explained in a TikTok video that arthritis doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Instead, the owner has chosen to give Happy the best care during his senior years, which includes special treats.

In last week’s TikTok video posted by @happytok08, the owner offered Happy a “big chunk of steak” to eat. Happy wasn’t in the room to begin, but as soon as the steak came out, Happy started hopping his way to victory. His owner said he happily hops every time he’s excited.

Happy turned the corner to the room, spotted the tasty treat and lit up with excitement. He used his front paws to hop closer to the steak. A smile spread across his face the entire time he moved closer.

He stopped and evaluated the treat, making sure it was up to his standards, and then he ripped it off the fork and scarfed it down. When that didn’t satisfy him, he looked to his owner. Happy expected a second piece of steak, but that was it for the day.

He shouldn’t be too upset, though. This senior dog gets spoiled with yummy treats almost daily, as one should in the golden years. Other videos shared by @happytok08 show Happy eating salmon slices, eggs, French fries and doggy treats, and each time he hops over graciously accepts his reward.
